Bob Celotto

Bob Celotto was a good guy on his own merit. A strapping man that looked and lived many years younger than his seventy-five. I believe that part of Bob's appeal to me was that he reminded me of my own Father who passed 18 years ago. Like my Father, Bob mostly seemed to live a simple life, a life he lived for his Family. Bob went to work each day and then came home to the embrace of his wife of over fourty-five years, Mary Jane. Bob never had a chance to retire, much like my Father as, as he mostly worked until the day he died. Like my Father & I, Bob was also of Italian decent, a native of the North, and a big Sports fan. Over the last few years, I frequently mentioned to Bob that I wanted to take him to a Met's Spring Training game when they would come to town (as Bob played semi-pro ball in his younger days). I never followed up that commitment, as there would always be time for that in the future. Just as there would always be time to do the things that I should have done with my own Dad when I was younger. Too bad I was always busy doing things that were much less important. Bob's sharp wit will be missed, as will many other things about him.

The Final Cut that almost was...

Pink Floyd's Gilmour Blasts Glastonbury
Posted 10/7/2008 2:11:00 PM by Conrad Doucette
Filed under: David Gilmour, Glastonbury, Pink Floyd, Richard Wright, Roger Waters
Over their career, the members of Pink Floyd developed a reputation for being guarded and polite. Even at the height of the Waters/Gilmour acrimony in the late 80s and early 90s, the charged insults and threats between the former bandmates were delivered with even voices and tone.
Which is why it was quite a shock to hear what Floyd guitarist and singer David Gilmour had to say at this week's Q Magazine Awards in London. Gilmour was at the ceremony to collect an Outstanding Contribution award for his work both with Pink Floyd and as a solo artist. He dedicated the award to Richard Wright, the Pink Floyd keyboardist who passed away last month. Which led to Gilmour talking about Wright. Which led to Gilmour saying that it was Wright's dream to play Glastonbury, the legendary English music festival. Which led Gilmour to - shockingly - disclose that Pink Floyd approached Glastonbury organizers about playing a set at this past June's festival.
Whoa.
Which led to Gilmour revealing that Glastonbury SAID NO. Sayeth Gilmour: "One of the last things he wanted to do, in this last year, was to do a big outdoor festival, such as Glastonbury. We weren't able to do that due for all sorts of strange reasons, which, again, is a sadness." In other words, EFF YOU Glastonbury for turning us down; now, it'll never happen.
How could Glastonbury, or anyone, TURN DOWN Pink Floyd?
According to Glasto important person (and daughter of founder Michael Eavis) Emily Eavis, it all had to do with logistics. The band's agents did not contact festival organizers until three weeks before the event, when headliners were already in place and details sorted. Eavis said that organizers considered bumping down an existing headliner, but ultimately decided that tact was not fair to the artists already on the bill.
So who can we blame for this ridiculously enormous missed opportunity? No one, really. It was a matter of logistics and timing. But we can certainly project our disappointed frustrations at some of the headliners who performed. That means you, Kings of Leon. Watch your backs!

Today's Dolphins looking as good as yesteryear
We know the Dolphins are playing very well the past two games. But did you know they are playing at a level that would rival some pretty good Dolphins teams of the past? Some playoff Dolphins teams?

It's true. Consider these facts:

FACT: The Dolphins have now defeated both teams that played in the AFC title game last season. The last time that happened was in 1998 when Miami beat both Pittsburgh and Denver after they played in the AFC title game the season before.

FACT: Chad Pennington's passer rating was 109.6 against San Diego, marking the second consecutive game his rating is over the century mark. The last time a Dolphins QB went consecutive games with a passer rating over 100 was in 2002 when Jay Fiedler did it against Detroit and Indianapolis. The Dolphins have gone through 10 starting quarterbacks between Fiedler and Pennington in those six years.

FACT: The Miami offense has gained 851 net yards the past two games. That is the highest two-game total for Miami since 1995, Don Shula's final year as head coach. Think about that.

FACT: The Dolphins had one penalty for 5 yards. That is the lowest amount of penalty yards by the team since 1998.

FACT: The 10 first downs Miami yielded is the fewest total allowed by the Dolphins since 2003.
I realize this doesn't mean the Dolphins should be looking toward the Super Bowl, as Justin Smiley suggested in my column following Sunday's victory over San Diego. But it definitely does speak of excellent things the team is doing that match accomplishment by past Miami teams that were playoff qualifiers.

Great Gig In The Sky

R.I.P.: Pink Floyd Keyboardist Richard Wright

Pink Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright died of cancer today at the age of 65. Although his bandmates Roger Waters and David Gilmour wrote the bulk of the group's songs, Wright contributed bizarre acid-rock instrumentals such as 'Careful With That Axe, Eugene' and 'Interstellar Overdrive,' and was a co-writer on many FM-radio staples from Dark Side of the Moon, including 'Breathe,' 'Time,' 'The Great Gig In The Sky' and 'Us and Them,' where he also sang lead vocals. To learn more about Wright and Pink Floyd's entire discography, click here.

Daunte speaks out

A letter to the NFL community:
Now that we are on the eve of teams selecting their 53 man rosters, I feel compelled to give my account of what I believe is a misunderstanding of who I am and what I have been trying to accomplish during this free agency period. It is my hope that I can provide some clarity by sharing what I am thinking straight from me and not through the interpretation of the media, or second hand information. That is why I am grateful to Mike Florio for giving me this platform to speak to the NFL community through the vehicle of profootballtalk.com.
First of all I want to explain why I have decided to exercise my right under the CBA to represent myself rather than hire an agent. This decision has more to do with my desire to handle my business affairs personally, than anything negative about agents. After the 2004 season I took a crash course in understanding my 10 year 102 million contract line by line. What I learned was that I had a long term deal with no guarantees for the remaining eight years. After my injury in 2005, the contract became an important issue that had to be dealt with. It took a trade to Miami and nearly 18 months to get out from under that contract.
My approach now is that I am looking for a relationship with a team that is based on mutual respect. I am willing to put on my suit when it comes to business and exchange it for an NFL uniform when it is time to play the game. I am not suggesting that this is the right approach for every player. I am only saying that it is what works best for me at this point in my career. I would only hope that teams would not keep me from working because of my approach to the business side of the game.
Secondly, I want to clear up the misinformation regarding my desire to only be a starter. I would think that every QB in this league wants to start. However, contrary to popular belief, I know how to play my role. I set out this free agency period with three categories that I wanted to explore.
1. Teams that were looking for a starter
2. Teams that were open for QB competition
3. Teams that needed a veteran back-up
With the help of the NFLPA, I researched what the market value was for each category. I contacted 14 teams that fell into these categories. Unfortunately, I did not receive any real interest from the teams I contacted. When the Packers finally offered for me to come to Green Bay to back-up Aaron Rodgers there were no real negotiations. They offered me a deal that was, according to my research, below market value. They said that they would get back to me after the draft.
When the beginning of training camp came and there was still no interest, I reached out to Commissioner Goodell to see if he had any suggestions. He asked Ray Anderson to check around the league and get back to me. Ray told me three things based on his discussions with teams. First of all he said that I should get an agent because teams were not comfortable dealing with me without one. The second thing he told me was that I should be ready to accept the vet minimum and start my career over. The third thing he said was that I would only have an opportunity if someone got hurt. This is why I went to Pittsburgh to work out for the team after Charlie got hurt, so I could see if what Ray Anderson said was true. After a great workout, I was offered the vet minimum with no negotiations. This is when I realized that there is something wrong.
For the sake of clarity, I never told anyone in Pittsburgh that I wanted to compete with Ben Rothlisberger for his job. This is an example of misrepresentation or misinformation.
Recently the Commissioner called to let me know that I was on the top of the list for a job if a key veteran got hurt. I really appreciate the Commissioner’s help, but I hate that I have to wait for a fellow QB to experience the misfortune of an injury in order for me to have an opportunity to continue my career. Why was I not given the chance to compete for a job? This is my question to the NFL. The answer seems to point to something that I choose not to embrace at this time. So instead, I will continue to believe for the best and prepare for the worst.
In the meantime my request is simply that teams give me the respect of talking directly to me rather than trying to interpret what I think or desire. I can handle the truth if they can handle my presence in discussions. I hope that my body of work in the league will earn me at least a conversation.

Editorial Review for Waxtree Records – by Daniel Fuller
Underground SurvivorLocated in a strip mall at the corner of Aloma Avenue and SR 436 in Winter Park, Waxtree Records doesn't pretend to cater to all tastes in music. Instead it emphasizes the niches its loyal customers enjoy: indie rock, punk, industrial/goth, techno and metal. The store has been at this location since the mid-'80s and has weathered all sorts of musical trends, as well as heaps of road construction and the openings of Orlando's mega-comglomerate music stores. Information CentralAn extensive selection of band T-shirts, concert posters and music magazines are available for your inspection. And if you want to know what shows are coming up, what's going on at your favorite club or are looking for players to jam with, check out the stacks of flyers that are dropped off at the shop daily. RaritiesLooking for a rare picture disc, single or box set? The counter area sports a selection of items that die-hards would probably drool over. Also, the wall behind the register displays a whole whack of import and domestic music videos, concert films and music documentaries.

"We are mourning our fallen brother. As we sat this afternoon, contemplating the news we had just received, we wondered how we could possibly do a show today. Dave put it into perspective stating, "There's no place I'd rather be than here with you guys right now." We cherish special memories of our lost friend. Tonight, Dave told a story about LeRoi at a bar in Virginia where the cash register was near the stage, and LeRoi leaned on the register because "standing had become a chore" and then played the most beautiful version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow. Dave said, "that was the day I fell in love with him." It's safe to say we all were in love with him. "It's always easier to leave, than to be left." -DM "

RIP Sax Man

Dave Matthews Band Saxophonist LeRoi Moore Dead at 46 : Rolling Stone : Rock and Roll Daily

Man, what a frking bummer. I know LeRoi was not Jimi Henrix dying at the age of 30 or anything but he definitely was an integral part of DMB. 46...Too young. I have often read that he helped Dave a lot with the structuring or many of their songs. Fortunately I do not think that this will cause the band to breakup as they have many capable musicians ready and willing to step into any role as needed...not that they will ever be the same old DMB. Glad I got to see the LeRoi led DMB Live seven times while he was alive. Dug how he always had the dark shades on 24/7, my kinda guy. RIP.

Business 101

Take it from UPS: Left turns waste gas
http://www.ajc.com/services/content/business/stories/2008/07/03/ups_gas_tips.html?

Buck mentioned something to me the other day about UPS limiting their left turns to minimize gas consumption so I searched out more info as it sounded interesting to me.
I thought to myself that something so simple (that I probably would not have ever thought of) could be so profound. May not sound like much until you see how much something so simple can save so much money/time for a large company. In my mind, this idea optimizes the spirit of Business and the simplicity of how good analytical thinking can totally reshape your annual business costs.

Amadeus

Zoie is coming into her own with music appreciation.
We were watching a 'clean' version of Old School (one of my favs) on TNT/HD this morning.
A scene pops up where they are playing Duran Duran in the background and Zoie say's 'Daddy, they are playing Hungry Like A Wolf'. Wow! One thing my child will never be deprived of is a well rounded mix of music at an early age. I think that she is about a year away from being ready to go jam at a DMB concert with me!

Interesting observations....

I notice an influx of great young Asian Women coming into Golfing. Maybe 5-6 of them. Cool, not big deal. Observation - Why arn't there any Asian men Golfers? Maybe I am missing them?

There are a high percentage of MLB Baseball Players from the Dominican Rep. Is now, and always has been. DR is connected to Haiti right ala Florida/Georgia in a sense? Why arn't there any Haitian Sensations in MLB? I don't see many Jean's running in Baseball circles. Maybe some are Haitian and just going in as Dominicans - not sure.

Time

Sarah McLachlan's voice seduce's my mojo every once in a full moon.
She is about due for a new album in the next year!

Time here,
all but means nothing, just shadows that move across the wall
They keep me company, but they don't ask of me
they don't say nothing at all.
And I need just a little more silence
And I need just a little more time
But you send your thieves to me
silently stalking me
Dragging me into your wall
Would you give me no choice in this?
I know you can't resist, trying reopen a sore

Leave me be, I don't want to argue
I'd just get confused and I'd come all undone
If I agree, well, it's just to appease you
Cause I don't remember what we're fighting for

You see love-- a tight, thorny thread that you spin in a circle of gold
You have me to hold me
a token for all to see
captured to be yours alone
And I need just a little more silence,
and I just need a little more time
The courage to pull away
there will be hell to pay
the deeper you cut to the bone

Leave me be, I don't want to argue
I'd just get confused and I'd come all undone
If I agree, well, it's just to appease you
Cause I don't remember what we're fighting for

Time here,

Did you ever meet Sanford? Yeah the one over these --->

Sanford never wants to commit to making a decision. Sanford always defers to you for guidence in the decision making process. It's not that Sanford cannot make a decision, quite the contrary as Sanford is a smart chap.

You see Sanford would rather that you make the decision so that he can stay on safe ground. Sanford wins either way. You make a good decision and Sanford says nothing. You make a bad decision and Sanford gives you the business!

As did J.Cash, Sanford rarely Walks the Line.

Lesson Learned #439

I don't go out in the sun much and when I do I am generally clothed.
Occasionally (once per year), I venture out as a hot dog (not to be mistaken with updaw....)

I'm at Jaxville last weekend and ready for Pool day at my Sis's house. Everyone is waxing up on the sun creme. Everyone is suggesting that I do so also. Not a change, what can happen in 2 hours, esp as most of my body will be either submerged, and covered with a hat and sunglasses - right?

Not so... freaking burnt to a crisp! You know that you got lit up when the following happens:
a) Blisters forming after 3 days on the burned areas
b) Still cannot sleep for more than an hour at a time without pain, after 3rd day
c) Shower still hurts after 4 days

Anyway, looking forward to disobeying Mother Nature again next yr!
